I designed three billboards for Target in Times Square, which were up September 4 - October 31, 2009. They were on the south side of 42nd Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue. There were three other artists for a total of nine billboards, arranged through the advertising agency Mother Industries. My three billboards alone totaled 100 feet long and 75 feet tall— that's six times the size of my apartment! Now that they're down, the vinyl is in the process of being upcycled into one-of-a-kind limited edition totes by Anna Sui to be shipped out in January 2010.
I was recently selected as one of the winners of The Greene Space's Call For Art. My piece, "Los No. 1 Meats", is on exhibit there opening day (which was April 28, 2009) through Spring 2010. The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space is WNYC's state-of-the-art, multimedia performance space and broadcast studio on the ground floor of their new home, 44 Charlton Street (at Varick Street) in Manhattan.
I try to create art that encourages the viewer to engage with the chaos and density of New York City. Those menus slipped under the door; the tags and graffiti covering the local deli; the newspapers left behind on the train and littering the sidewalk; the daily bombardment of storefront signs. These might otherwise seem like a strenuous test to one’s inner zen, but I elevate them to the level of indigenous icons. Read more...
