Born in Indiana to a Mexican mom and Jewish dad, Josh Goldstein has been caught between divergent worlds all his life. In 1994 he moved to New York City, where he quickly began soaking in the city's cultural stew. He studied architecture at Pratt Institute, worked at various architectural firms, and even designed a few homes on his own, but mostly he rode his bike and explored the city. Spurred by a road trip through the southwest where he took pictures of old chop suey parlors and 24-hour donut shops, he began photographing signs and storefronts on his rides around the city. Chinese fishmongers, Jamaican patty stands, Hassidic hat shops, and Halal live chicken markets all beckoned.
The classic New York City bodega especially caught his attention. He was attracted by the bodegas' bright colors, bold graphics, and rotating set of key words and phrases, as well as by their can-do entrepreneurial spirit and current state of faded glory.
Most recently he has been commissioned by Target to display his work in Times Square on three billboards totaling 6000 square feet. He is currently represented by JLA Studios in Brooklyn, where he has had several group shows. His work is hanging at Vitamin Water and Credit Suisse First Boston headquarters, in the main branch of the Bronx Public Library, as well as numerous private collections throughout the United States and Europe. He has also shown his work at WNYC's Greene Space, Galapagos Art Space, and the BAM Jewish Film Festival. Goldstein has been featured in the New York Times, House Beautiful, the Daily News, and Sofrito for Your Soul. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute, and a Bachelor of Arts from Washington University in St. Louis.
